HB Bearings Reaches a Milestone in Business
HB Bearings celebrates 50 years in business, it was founded in 1972 by the late Norman Hirst, who sadly passed away in September 2021, at the age of 90. Norman had over 70 years’ experience in the engineering business and was still working up to the start of covid-19 at the age of 89. Norman would have loved to have reached his 50-year anniversary of HB Bearings, as he was devoted to the company. He will always be remembered for his tireless efforts to make HB Bearings successful. He was proud to see the current expansion of HB Bearings with the acquisition of Gamet Bearings in 2019 where the whole production was brought up from Colchester to HB’s manufacturing facility in Huddersfield. Both companies manufacture special bearings of high quality and precision.
Norman’s son Graham Hirst the Managing Director of HB Bearings, who has also been in Engineering for over 37 years and was Norman’s Business partner since 1997, when Norman’s original business partner retired, he wanted to mark the achievement and decided to invite all employees and their partners, along with ex- retirees to a night out in Huddersfield at Nawaab Indian Restaurant with a full night’s entertainment for all to enjoy. We all raised a glass to Norman and a great round of applause in thanks to Norman’s vision back in 1972 that was the whole reason why we were there that evening.
A great night was had by all, and it was a much needed coming together after the last few years due to the covid restrictions. Graham said the employees have worked hard all the way through Covid and as a company like many, we have had to make lots of adjustments, especially to keep up to the company philosophy, which is to manufacture bearings to the high quality required for the demanding sectors we operate in. Here’s to the next 50 years! Hopefully this will come to fruition as Graham’s daughter will make the company a 3-generation business as she looks forward to an engineering career in their family business.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Norman Hirst Obituary
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Norman Hirst the Chairman of HB Bearings who passed away peacefully on Thursday 16th September after a short illness.
Norman was devoted to the Company and we will always remember his tireless efforts to make HB Bearings successful. He put his heart and soul into engineering for over 70 years initially working his way up from an apprentice engineer through to Managing Director. In 1972 Norman took the bold step to go it alone and set up HB Bearings. He would have loved to see his Company celebrate it's 50 year anniversary in 2022 yet he was proud to see the current expansion of HB Bearings with the acquisition of Gamet Bearings in 2019 and they brought the whole production up from Colchester to HB's manufacturing facility in Huddersfield.
Norman at 88 years old had to step back due to Covid-19 but still was involved on a consultancy basis.
Graham Hirst Managing Director has been in the business since 1983 and then became his father's Business partner in 1997. Graham would like to thank everyone for their kind words of support and he endeavours to follow in his father's footsteps and continue with the Company's philosophy to manufacture bearings to the high quality required for the demanding sectors they operate in.
Norman's vast bearing knowledge was invaluable to both colleagues and customers alike, his contribution to British Engineering will be greatly missed.

HB Bearings in the spotlight.
TAIWANESE MACHINES ACCURATE TO MICRONS AFTER 25 YEARS
Re-printed from a Case Study by WH-Lead Ltd.
In August 2020, a pair of BT40 vertical machining centres (VMCs) built-in Taiwan by Leadwell was supplied by UK and Ireland agent WH-Lead
(www.wh-lead.co.uk)
to the Holmfirth factory of HB Bearings, which less than a year previously had increased its turnover by one third through the acquisition of Gamet Bearings.
Low-volume manufacture of both bearing ranges, which include precision radial, taper roller, deep groove ball, cylindrical roller and angular contact as well as many other types, is being consolidated in the Holmfirth factory, where a purpose-built extension has been added to house some of the production equipment from Gamet Bearings.
The new Leadwell machines, a 4-axis model with rotary table and a 5-axis trunnion-type machining centre, were bought to strengthen production capacity for manufacturing the high precision, bespoke bearings in metric and imperial sizes.
A wide range of materials are involved, including stainless steel, tool steel, plastics, bronze, aluminium and exotic alloys. The bearings are often specials, new designs or obsolete types that may need to be reverse-engineered to keep old manufacturing plant, steel mills, mining equipment, oil rigs or classic cars in operation.
Graham Hirst, managing director of HB Bearings / Gamet Bearings commented, “We have prioritised the purchase of these Taiwanese machines ever since we bought our first one, a machining centre, more than 25 years ago.
“We sold it when the two new machines arrived, with a view to pre-empting its eventual failure. However, right to the end it still milled dowel holes in 62 Rockwell steel to within 10 microns.
“We now have five machining centres from Leadwell and three of their lathes, including two recent models installed in August 2017, which are just as well-built, accurate and reliable.”
Purchase of a second five-axis machining centre for the factory, a Leadwell V-40iT, was down to a desire to supply increasingly complex bearings, especially to the motorsport sector, in ever shorter lead-times.
Some products have complex flanges and profiles that need simultaneous interpolation of all five axes for their production. Others have angled holes that benefit from using the machine in 3+2-axis mode. By automatically repositioning the component using the rotary axes, production can be completed in, for example, two operations rather than the four that would be needed on a 4-axis machine, reducing the manufacturing cost.
The V-40iT was selected partly due to its competitive price for an 846 x 635 x 488 mm capacity 5-axis machine having a 12,000 rpm / 18.5 kW (24.8 kW-30min) BBT spindle with through-coolant and a 40-tool magazine. Additionally, the generous width between the trunnion bearings makes it possible to accommodate on the 350 mm diameter table a 680 mm fixture for holding a 636 mm diameter bearing cage.
It was the other new machining centre, a V-30iF four-axis VMC with 800 x 460 x 510 mm working envelope, that replaced the similarly sized, 25-year-old machining centre. The latest model has a 12,000 rpm / 11 kW (14.7 kW-30 min) spindle with through-coolant and 24-tool ATC.
Nearly all programming is carried out either conversationally or by directly inputting G-code at the machine controls, the latest machine being fitted with the Fanuc Series 0iMF Plus. Any particularly complex features are developed in Ansys SpaceClaim and imported.
Mr Hirst concluded, “We continue to buy Leadwell machines because they maintain their accuracy over decades. The oldest model we currently operate is more than 20 years old. Our operators like them too, as the machines do not cause any trouble and the Fanuc control option is also popular.
“Over such a long period since we bought the first machine, it has been interesting for me to observe how Leadwell has progressed as a machine tool manufacturer on the international stage. Their mills and lathes were always good, but they are even better now.”

HB Bearings in the local community - The Honley Feast,
Go Kart Derby 17th September 2016
HB Bearings are proud members of the Honley Business Association
and involve themselves with the local community wherever possible.
Many local events are supported and an example of this is the HB
Bearings Motorsport Division's entry in the The Honley Feast,
Go Kart Derby, on Saturday 17th September.
The kart was ably driven by nine year old Nell Hirst (daughter of
Graham Hirst, managing director of HB Bearings).
Nell won first prize in the "Best Looking Go Kart" category and
finished 4th in the time trials.
The Best Looking Go Kart was judged by Colne Valley MP Jason
McCartney (right)
pictured here with driver Nell and Team Manager Graham.
All funds raised by the Honley Business Association will go
towards implementing phase two of the new CCTV scheme for Honley
village.
All photos courtesy of Sandie Nicholson, photographer, Honley
The RNLI also benefited from fundraising on the day from Graham
who is President of the Honley & Brockholes Branch of the
Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Nell. (Guess who's in the
suit?)
The spirit of the Honley Feast, revived this year by the Honley
Business Association was an annual event dating back to the 1800s.

LAP RECORD AT THE CLASSIC TT
HB recently manufactured a non standard roller bearing used in a
1992 Yamaha YZR500 Grand Prix motorcycle gearbox for Padgetts
Motorcycles Batley. The bearing was reverse engineered from the
old sample as this was the only information available.
This was achievable due to HB’s 42 years of technical expertise in
bearing manufacture. The motorcycle was then raced at the 2015
Isle of Man Classic in August by Padgetts Valvoline Racing Team.
Riding the classic machine was popular TT rider Bruce Anstey. He
came second overall in the Formula One TT race and also set a new
lap record for a two-stroke machine with an average speed of
126.261 mph. HB Bearings Motorsport Division are delighted to be
able to offer a low volume, high quality, special bearing
manufacturing service to keep some of these great historical
machines racing.
